On 26 August 2026, Prof. Konstantinos Mattas participated as one of three academic experts in the Consultation Event on the New Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2028–2034, organised by the Region of Thessaly in Larissa.
The event brought together more than 300 participants, mainly regional and national stakeholders, including farmers, livestock producers, beekeepers, cooperatives and producer organisations, agri-food businesses, and professional and scientific bodies.
As one of Greece’s most important agricultural regions, Thessaly faces key challenges related to climate resilience, water management, environmental sustainability, production costs, generational renewal and the long-term viability of farming. The consultation provided a space to discuss these challenges in the context of the future CAP and the priorities for the region’s agricultural sector.
Connecting agricultural policy with Crop-MATCHING principles
The discussions reflected several principles promoted through Crop-MATCHING, including the need for evidence-based and context-specific agricultural solutions, climate-resilient and sustainable farming systems, effective knowledge transfer, and active stakeholder participation in shaping future agricultural pathways.
The consultation also highlighted the value of bringing together scientific expertise, farmers, value-chain actors, public authorities and regional stakeholders to help ensure that future agricultural policies respond to the environmental, economic and social realities of individual European regions.
