The Crop-MATCHING project continues to explore innovative ways to optimise crop compatibility and promote more sustainable agricultural systems across Europe, with Sicily serving as one of its pilot territories. By analysing how different crops can successfully grow together, the project supports farmers in making informed decisions that improve land use, productivity and the resilience of their farming systems.
Among the crops assessed in Sicily, Moringa oleifera has emerged as a particularly promising option. Previous results from the InterReg ReInvestir project had already highlighted the crop’s versatility and wide range of applications, from its nutritional value to its industrial potential. Building on this knowledge, Crop-MATCHING is exploring how Moringa can be successfully integrated into local farming systems through crop-matching approaches.
Exploring compatible cropping systems
In the Sicilian context, Moringa oleifera is being evaluated both as an intercropped species with cereals such as wheat and in combination with other complementary crops. Field trials and agronomic studies indicate that Moringa can be cultivated alongside legumes, including chickpeas and fava beans, as well as horticultural crops such as tomatoes and zucchini. These combinations can contribute to improving soil fertility and creating favourable microclimatic conditions without excessive competition for water or nutrients.
By combining Moringa with complementary crops, farmers can diversify production systems while supporting soil health and farm resilience. This approach also creates opportunities to produce both staple food crops and functional products, demonstrating the practical value of crop matching for sustainable agriculture.
Connecting research with practical applications
By bringing together knowledge generated through Crop-MATCHING and the InterReg ReInvestir project, this work illustrates how research results can support practical agricultural innovation. The exchange of knowledge between complementary initiatives contributes to the development of solutions that help farmers improve productivity and sustainability while promoting crops that are well adapted to local conditions.
The integration of Moringa oleifera within Crop-MATCHING highlights how innovative crop combinations can optimise the use of natural resources, diversify agricultural production and contribute to more sustainable farming systems, reinforcing the project’s commitment to supporting resilient agriculture across Europe.
